FUTURE BOYZ:
Ladies and Gentleman. Please welcome W&W.
We saw your performance at Electric Zoo Beach Tokyo  in Tokyo. We loved it and we also loved today’s show.

W&W:
We were totally into it and feeling it. The energy we got from the crowd was insane. It was slowly getting dark.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Right right.

W&W:
Right next to the beach, so the atmosphere was amazing.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Yeah. Did you eat Japanese food?

W&W:
We always eat Japanese food. That’s the funny thing. I think we eat Sushi and Japanese stuff 4 times a week.

FUTURE BOYZ:
In your country?

W&W:
Every country we are at, we ask where is a Japanese restaurant? It’s funny. Everywhere.

FUTURE BOYZ:
You guys can eat wasabi?

W&W:
I like it. Not too much though. Lol. He takes a lot of wasabi. We have a friend who takes pure wasabi, a large amount. He is crazy. We ate raw fish yesterday.

FUTURE BOYZ:
You eat raw fish? Like sashimi?

W&W:
Yeah yeah. We eat it almost everyday. We like wagyu beef which is really really nice.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Aha. Yeah

W&W:
I think sashimi, we like 4 to 5 times a week. Almost everyday.

FUTURE BOYZ:
When did you guys start eating Japanese food? Because, no offence, but for foreign people, there is no culture to eat raw fish. It’s always fry, grill or something right?

W&W:
A few years ago we tried sushi. We thought ok it’s actually good then we started eating it more and more and more. Right now almost only thing we eat is Japanese food. Because it’s healthy, delicious and right. It’s perfect.
When we DJ and we eat beef it makes us full. But we eat fish, sashimi and sushi so we feel good when we jump and go crazy. Italian food is also very nice but it’s so heavy. You know?

FUTURE BOYZ:
Oh right right. So before you guys play a light meal would be the best?

W&W:
Always. Always Japanese.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Wow. I love to hear that. Thank you very much!
Ok. Could you tell us when you guys started creating music?

W&W:
I think it was like 2007. We’d made our own music before, but we started working on a new project as W&W together. But it was for fun and we didn’t plan on doing anything with it. But as a few years went by we started to notice that the songs we did together got placed with Armand Van Buuren  and a lot of the other big guys so we actually started focusing on that. So around 2010 was when we started doing only W&W songs.

FUTURE BOYZ:
So you’ve guys have know each other for a long time?

W&W:
Since around 2007, so that’s around 8 or 9 years almost.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Wow.

W&W:
A long time – way too long!

FUTURE BOYZ:
So do you guys get into fights or arguments? Or no?

W&W:
It’s a partnership so you always have fights, but I think that’s natural. I think that after a fight you probably make the right decision – if you can’t have a fight I don’t think that’s normal. Without fights or discussions there will be no progress.

FUTURE BOYZ:
So dayo ne. Right right. You should always be having discussions, opinions….respect each other, right?

W&W:
You guys probably have the same. It means that you are looking for a way forward.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Like you just said – working with Armin Van Buuren, we had a chance, an opportunity to interview Armin and Hardwell. I didn’t know his first name was Robert!

Armin van Buuren x FUTURE BOYZ Interview 2015/02/13

Hardwell x FUTURE BOYZ Special Interview 2015/05/14

W&W: Robert, yeah, yeah…

FUTURE BOYZ:
That’s my first name too! (laughs)

W&W:
Ah!! No way!! (laughs) That’s crazy!

FUTURE BOYZ:
He was like, “Hi, this is Robert.” And I thought, “Robert? Is this Hardwell?” And he was like, “Yeah, yeah”
So, we have like Armin, Hardwell, Tiesto, Martin Garrix and of course you guys- there’s a lot of Holland, Netherland DJs that are taking all of the dance music scene right now. And I was just wondering from your perspective, what is the key factor of that?

W&W:
I think that it’s because when we were young, there was always dance music on the radio. Always. And then you have all your role models like Tiesto, Armin Van Buren, Ferry Corsten  who already became big outside of the Netherlands. So as a young Dutch kid you see that it is possible to be a DJ and play globally. So I think that helped – to have your role models. And the Dutch have always embraced dance music. I think that’s it, (we) were one of the first countries to have dance parties and to play dance music on the radio. Because when I was like ten, I heard Alice DJ , “Better off Alone” which is a dance song and I thought, “What is this kind of music, I love this.” And in America it was only Hip Hop and R&B.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Right, right, right. So for you guys it is very natural to listen to this kind of music because it is a part of your life.

W&W:
So in the late 90s we were having parties for 50,000 people and the government was really supporting that as well.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Oh wow!

W&W:
Yeah, so the parties went on until seven in the morning, so there’s always been a very big dance atmosphere in Holland, in the community.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Right, right, right. I see, I see.
What type of software do you use to create?

W&W:
Right now we use Ableton, we used to use Reason together with Cubase. But we switched solely to Ableton since we have so many bookings. So we have to make most of the stuff in the plane , in the hotel. And for us we have to make the radio show mixes and it has the best workflow for us. So we’ve reached to Ableton for right now.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Is it hard to switch?

W&W:
Yes, in the beginning it is. It takes a few minutes to get used to. There was an advantage we had because we had made all of our radio shows in it, so we knew our way around it. But it still is a new way of production and mixing. It took a while, I think the first two months we really didn’t make any songs. We were just practicing. But I think after awhile you get used to it. I think now we are better than we were in the other programs. So…

FUTURE BOYZ:
I see. What’s your favorite synthesizer?

W&W:
Still, we still use the Sylenth1 a lot and the Access Virus T1 we use that a lot.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Yeah, yeah

W&W:
Uh, Spire?

FUTURE BOYZ:
Yeah, yeah Spire. That one’s nice. Yeah.

W&W:
I think that’s the three synths that we use the most, right? And of course sometimes you try something else…

FUTURE BOYZ:
What’s your favorite plug-in software?

W&W:
Plug-in? Ooo, yeah…Umm, the Arts Acoustic Reverb.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Reverb?

W&W:
Yeah, because many of our sounds – for instance I like bass in reverb – because it’s a big room. A big room it sounds like its in a hall, right? So reverb is like one the most important effects you need. And the one we use the most by Arts Acoustic creates that big room vibe in our songs. Makes them sound like they are in a stadium.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Mmmm. Nice, nice.
So, what do you use as a maximizer after mixing?

W&W:
We have different things, every song is different. We have Izotope Ozone.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Ozone! Yes. Do you have version 6 or 5?

W&W:
We still have version 4!

FUTURE BOYZ:
4? Really?

W&W:
Yeah we recreated the same preset that we start with in 4 and 5 but it didn’t sound as good. We have to try it in 6, we didn’t try there yet. We’ll do that when we have time at home. We have the Cytomic Glue on the master and sometimes its just some of the Ableton plug-ins like the multi-band of course. What’s the other one? OTT, we sometimes use that a little bit. But it depends on the song.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Uh, yeah it depends on the song.

W&W:
Every song is different with mixing and mastering in the end.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Could you tell us a little bit about Mainstage Music ? When I talked to Armin, he said he wants to expand his view of music and return to no boundaries – like any type of music: deep house, techno, trance…

W&W:
Yeah, but like Mainstage Music is our label and it actually has no boundaries because on the Mainstage you can play whatever kind of music, whatever has that Mainstage feel. So sometimes we will release a trance song and then we’ll do a big room house song, then an electro house song, and then a hard style song. Maybe even a future deep house. When it has that feel that you can play it on a big stage - then we can release it. So we always did that, from the beginning we tried to switch it up and not have only one style for our label. Because our sets are not based solely on one style – we go from trance to house to electro to like hard style in the end or like some softer stuff as well. And that’s what we try to do with the label as well. One thing we try to avoid is a very generic style –even a copy of a copy of song. We want something new.

FUTURE BOYZ:
Yeah. Alright this will be the last question, it’s a little off topic. Me personally, I love to play games I started with Halo, Call of Duty Black Ops – do you guys know of any good new games?

W&W:
The last game we played for like days was ‘The Last of Us” and it was amazing!
Do you like that game?

FUTURE BOYZ:
Well they haven’t actually started selling that yet here.
Playstation4?

W&W:
Yeah its on Playstation 3 but its like they remastered it for Playstation 4 its…
If you like Resident Evil and those kinds of games, kind of cinematic but…that game is the best. The best we ever – we play of course Black Ops, we play Call of Duty, we play Halo, we play all of that stuff. But this game is sick! It’s like you are in a movie and it’s so emotional. It’s got the scary moments like in Resident Evil, you really get attached to the person, you feel that emotion. Like Game of Thrones, you know that series? You don’t want anybody to die – it happens in the game, you have to make a choice and it’s sad. We always play that at night with all our friends and when somebody dies in the game everyone is silent for like ten minutes. We get so attached. You should definitely try that out.

FUTURE BOYZ:
I am gonna check it out. Thank you very much. Thanks for having us.

W&W:
Thank you!

FUTURE BOYZ:
Amazing

FUTURE BOYZ:
So last question, the summer is coming up, what are the plans for W & W over the summer?

W&W:
We have a lot of gigs of course like all over. All over Europe and all over the world as well. We have a new song coming with BLASTERJAXX in June then we have our new single. We sampled Whitney Houston and we got clearance and think its actually gonna be out in June. Then we have a new song with Armin Van Buuren and a new song with Hardwell. A new song with Motte and what else? A new remix with Dillion Frances and DJ Snake. We are gonna give away a bootleg for free. I think tomorrow we are gonna do like Timmy Trumpet / Freaks we made like an edit of that and we are gonna give it away for free on Soundcloud (W&W Soundcloud). So it’s like almost every week or two we have new song coming out.
